I have been writing for well over ten years, and in that time have had several short stories published in magazines and have been a winner in various short-story competitions. I gained a MA in Creative Writing from Trent University in 1997. In 1999 I won a bursary from East Midlands Arts to complete a set of short stories on musical themes.

I have always been interested in attending courses to both improve my writing and examine broader issues related to storytelling. Consequently, in 2003 I gained an OCN qualification in basic filmmaking, and had a script filmed. Later that same year I enrolled on a one-year OCN filmmaking course at Confetti Studios in Nottingham. Within the last eighteen months I have completed three filmmaking modules at Derby University, all of the resulting films having been scripted by me. I am now hoping to develop filmmaking skills, not only in writing, but also in film production and editing.

Now I have more time, I am hoping to develop a stage play I began some three years ago, centred around the burgeoning blues scene in this country in the early 1960s, looking at shifting attitudes towards race and sexual relationships at that time. I am also developing two film pieces for production, one to be set in a Derby inner city primary school.

I believe that good stories arise from character rather than incident. It is the chance to explore character that I find the most interesting aspect of writing. Through my work on film courses, I am also intrigued by story structure, and ways to present story away from the traditional linear sequencing.

I love going to see films, mainly foreign language and independents, and visit the Metro/QUAD cinema at least once a week. I enjoy collecting and listening to a wide range of music, from early European music to modern electronica. I go to gigs and other music performances as often as I can. I visit a gym four times a week.
